CBSE AI Curriculum 2026-27: Class 3 to 12, Gemini in Schools, and SOAR

By Mohit Agarwal, Paath.online5 min read

CBSE has proposed a comprehensive Artificial Intelligence and Computational Thinking (AI & CT) curriculum starting from Class 3 in the 2026-27 academic year, with NCERT reviewing the framework. Aligned with NEP 2020 and the National Curriculum Framework, it will run through Class 12. Here's the structure and how tools like Google Gemini fit in.

Curriculum Structure: Class 3 to 12

  • Classes 3–5: Computational thinking embedded in existing subjects (about 50 hours).
  • Classes 6–8: Foundational AI concepts with interactive projects (about 15 hours).
  • Classes 9–10: Advanced CT and intermediate AI as compulsory subjects.
  • Classes 11–12: AI and Machine Learning as elective subjects.

Resource materials and digital modules are expected by December 2025, with teacher training through NISHTHA and partner institutions.

Google Gemini and India's AI Education

India has the highest global usage of Gemini for learning and is Gemini's largest user base among 18–24 year-olds. Over 2 million Indian students have access to Google's advanced AI tools at no cost for a year, and India leads in use of Guided Learning in Gemini. Google is focusing on teacher-centered AI tools that work with India's diverse state curricula, device access, and connectivity—so AI supports classrooms rather than replacing them.

SOAR and Viksit Bharat 2047

The SOAR (Skilling for AI Readiness) initiative builds AI awareness from the grassroots. The push ties into the Viksit Bharat 2047 vision. Google.org has committed an ₹85 crore grant to Wadhwani AI for AI-led transformation of government education platforms—aiming to reach 75 million students and 1.8 million educators by December 2027.
